A Beatle has reached his 80s!

Ringo Starr became the first octogenarian Beatle when he turned 80 on Tuesday, July 7. The Fab Four drummer and accomplished solo musician received many tributes to mark the milestone, including from his lone surviving Beatles bandmate, Paul McCartney.

"Happy birthday SIR RICHARD alias RINGO," McCartney wrote on Twitter. "Have a great day my long time buddy! - Paul," he signed off.

McCartney's tribute referenced the knighted musician's real name, Richard Starkey, and the pair's nearly six-decade friendship. Sir Paul also celebrated a birthday of his own in June, his 78th.

Ringo Starr hits age 80: Tributes pour in

And while McCartney and Starr have long outlived John Lennon and George Harrison, another Beatles history figure did chime in with a tribute for Ringo's big day: None other than Pete Best, the drummer famous for having been fired and replaced by Starr shortly before the band emerged as a global pop music phenomenon.

"Thought about it and thought why not. Happy Birthday Ringo. It's a special one. Have a good day," Best wrote on Twitter.

On his Twitter account, Starr also shared a few otherworldly birthday messages. NASA's Curiosity Rover and the International Space Station's social media pages were among those to honour the musician, who expectedly returned their message of peace and love.
